Antabuse is medicine for treatment of chronic alcoholism. It makes person feel bad when it takes alcohol drinks. It is part of recovery program for such persons.
Inform your doctor if you have:
• diabetes
• psychotic disease
• heart disease
• taking paraldehyde
• brain damage
• kidney disease
• seizures
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding
• an allergic reaction to Antabuse
• liver disease
• recently exposure to alcohol
• under-active thyroid
You should take this medicine with water. Never take Antabuse twelve hours before or twelve hours later of taking alcohol drinks. You should keep regular intervals between doses. But do not take it more often than it is directed. If you think that you have overtaken it call poison control center at once. Do not give it to other persons.
If you forget to take a dose, try to take it as soon as possible. But if it is time to take the next dose, take only one.
With Antabuse do not take next staff:
• metronidazole
• alcohol
• tranylcypromine
• paraldehyde
• paclitaxel
• amprenavir
• cocaine
• lopinavir
• oral solutions
Additionally Antabuse can interact with next drugs:
• phenytoin
• warfarin
• isoniazid
Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol, use illegal drugs or smoke. Tell your doctor about nutritional supplements, dietary supplements and non-prescription drugs. It will help your specialist to check if it can interact with Antabuse. Consult with your doctor if you are going to stop or to start taking these pills.
Additionally check regularly about your progress with doctor.
If you are using Antabuse, do not take liquids or medications or toiletries that contain Alcohol. And never drink alcohol while taking Antabuse. Because even small amounts of alcohol can produce very unpleasant effects such as vomiting, flushing, chest pain or throbbing headache. Even heart problems, seizures and death can happens.
Possible side effects about which you should inform your doctor:
• allergic reactions
• numbness
• yellowing of the eyes or skin
• changes in vision
• general ill feeling
• confusion
• dark urine
• unusually weak
• loss of appetite
• right upper belly pain
Possible side effects which do not require medical attention:
• metallic taste
• headache
• drowsy
• vomiting
• change in sex drive
• dizziness
Keep Antabuse pills between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) tightly closed. If the expiration date passed, do not use these tablets. And keep your children out of the reach of these pills.
